ARCHIVED-About the Law Library

Library Facilities

Our policies related to using the library are on this page.  If you have a question about a policy, please ask.

Copying/Printing

The library has two printer-copiers on the main floor. Copies and printouts cost ten cents per page or exposure.

Printing

  • The computer system will prompt patrons to enter a billing code before a print job goes to the printer.   Hamline University students, faculty, and staff obtain their print billing code by logging into Piperline and choosing "Personal Information."  Non-Hamline patrons enter the billing code from the front of a print-copy card.

Copying

  • Hamline University students, faculty, and staff can make copies by swiping their Hamline ID in the card reader, by entering their print billing code, or by depositing coins or currency in the slots.  These Hamline University patrons obtain their print billing code number by logging into Piperline and choosing "Personal Information."  Non-Hamline patrons use coins or currency or enter the billing code from the front of a print-copy card.

Print-Copy Cards

  • Print-copy cards are available for purchase for $5.00 from the vending machine on the main floor.  The vending machine accepts one-dollar and five-dollar bills.  A billing code worth $4.00 appears on the back of the card.   Additional value may be added to the card in the university cashier’s office, in East Hall, Monday through Friday.

Payment, Change, and Refunds

  • There is no change machine in the library, but the printer-copiers dispense any change due after copying with coins or currency.  The library does not maintain a cash drawer.  Library staff cannot accept cash for printing, make change for patrons, give refunds, or waive charges due to financial hardship.  Patrons may pursue refund claims with Hamline University Information Technology Services (ITS) at 651.523.2220.  ITS refund and other policies are available on the ITS website.

Technical Problems

  • The printer-copiers are maintained by Hamline University Information Technology Services (ITS). If you have difficulties in operating the printer-copiers, notify the Circulation Desk attendant.  The attendant will address the issue or contact ITS at 651.523.2220.

Study Spaces

Study Rooms

The library has six group study rooms located on the upper level of the library. The rooms are kept locked, and law students may check out keys at the Circulation Desk. The following policies apply to use of the study rooms:

  • Study rooms may be reserved by current Hamline University School of Law students, faculty and staff only.
  • Study rooms may only be reserved by groups of two or more persons.
  • Reservations are made at the Circulation Desk on a first come basis.
  • Rooms cannot be reserved more than two days in advance.
  • A group cannot reserve a room for more than two hours per day, but may renew the room for an additional two hours if available.
  • If a group is more than fifteen minutes late, its reservation will be cancelled.
  • During the Exams Period, the Registrar's reservation of study rooms for the purpose of administering exams has priority over all other uses.
  • While individuals may not reserve a room, they are welcome to use a room if it is not in use by a group. Individuals must, however, give up a room if a group arrives to use it.

Library Carrels

The library does not assign or reserve carrels. All study carrels are open for patron use.

Noise

The library's noise policies have been developed in consultation with law students and aim to accommodate differing preferences regarding study environments. Please respect the needs of fellow patrons and follow these guidelines.

  • Quiet talking is permitted on the main floor.
  • Group study rooms are available for group study.
  • Open areas on the upper level of the library are designated quiet zones. No talking is permitted in these areas.

By popular demand, cell phone use is strictly prohibited in all areas of the library except group study rooms. Please silence or turn off your phone when using the library, and do not make calls or answer your phone while in the library.

Computers

Circulation Area Computers: Computers near the Circulation Desk are part of Hamline University's private network and are not available for general public access. These password-protected computers are for use by Hamline University students, faculty, staff, and certain categories of guest users who present appropriate identification.  A complete policy on guest use will be posted here shortly.  These computers provide convenient access to the online catalog, the Web, subscription databases, and other resources.

Computer Lab and Upper-Level Computers: Use of the computers in the main floor computer lab and on the upper level of the library is restricted to Hamline University students, faculty, and staff. These password-protected computers provide access to the online catalog, library resources, the Web, word processing, and other software applications. A scanner is available in the computer lab. Although located within the library, the computer lab is maintained by Hamline University Information Technology Services (ITS). Policies governing use of the computer lab are available on the ITS website.

Audiovisual Equipment

The library has a television with a built-in DVD/VCR player available to view DVDs and videocassettes for educational purposes. Patrons may reserve this equipment at the Circulation Desk.

A microform reader/printer is available in the microform room.

Security

While the library strives to provide a safe and secure research and study environment for all patrons, there have been occasional thefts. The library cannot be responsible for stolen property. Please do not leave your belongings unattended at any time.

If you are the victim of theft or have any other security concerns, report the incident to the Circulation Desk attendant immediately. A full-time staff member wil be notified and will call the Hamline University Security Office at 651.523.2100 if appropriate. You also may be asked to complete an incident report.
