Tips for Searching

CLICsearch is not Google, but it does include most (but not all) of the Hamline Library's resources.

Tips

There is no need to include full sentences in your search. Upper/lower case is irrelevent. Remember that the system is not reasoning, but only finding the series of characters you typed. Therefore, skip extraneous words, e.g.

Search: alamo

rather than the alamo

Search: st paul metro transit

rather than Metro Transit in city of St. Paul

Too many hits? Try putting double-quotes ( " ) around search terms to include the spaces:

e.g. "colonial peru"

To get print books and articles rather than electronic, you can Tweak My results by selecting  "Available at HAMLINE":

Limit results to only Available at Hamline U.

Expand My Results searches outside of the CLIC Libraries catalogs to include results that can be procured through Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)

Looking for an item on reserve?

Click the drop-down next to the search box magnifying glass and select "Course Reserves":

Send info. to your device

Use the E-MAIL button to send citation information, including the call number for books:

What will I find in CLICsearch?

  • Articles

  • Books

  • Capstone Projects

  • Course Reserves

  • Dissertations and Theses

  • Ebooks

  • Videos

  • And more!

Each item listed on the results page includes a citation for that item and links to its full-text or online version (if available) or a catalog record indicating at which CLIC library that item can be found and requested.

What will I NOT find in CLICsearch?

Our Research & Course Guides are not listed in CLICsearch.

CLICsearch doesn't cover some of our subscription databases --primarily statistical data or unique material.

All of our subscription databases can be accessed and searched directly through our Databases page.

Help beyond CLICsearch

If you would like help with CLICsearch or in searching any of our individual databases, please contact a librarian: Hamline Bush Library Research Assistance.

Known Issues

Improvements for CLICsearch will be ongoing. Provide your feedback.

Here are known issues that we are working on:

  • Limiting searches to Resource Type "Dissertations" does not show Capstone Theses and Capstones after 2014. Instead search the Hamline Repositories scope (dropdown) or search DigitalCommons@Hamline directly for these electronic Capstones.
  • Library items from other CLIC Libraries, that were checked out before May 31, may not show in My Library Account account information. If you have questions about checked out items, please contact the library.
  • After signing in, if no interaction is made with the browser tab for 30 minutes, a NetIQ Access Manager SAML message appears. If this happens, it simply indicates that the system has timed out for security purposes. Please visit CLICsearch and Sign in again.
  • My Library Account does not include items procured through Interlibrary loan (ILLiad). Please view Checked Out Items in ILLiad to see your ILLs.
  • The "Enter title or ISSN Journal" search box (accessed from the Journal Titles tab on the top menu of  CLICsearch) does not always find ISSNs. We recommend searching for ISSNs using the main Search box in the meantime until this can be fixed.
  • Sign Out from CLICsearch does not currently work. Our Hamline University authentication system gives an error saying that the request for logout could not be completed.  This issue is slated to be fixed in the May 2018 software development release.

If you discover a problem with CLICsearch that isn't listed here, feel free to provide feedback.

About CLIC

What is CLIC and why should you care?   CLIC Quick Facts

Cooperating Libraries In Consortium (CLIC) allows easy and quick lending between six university libraries in the Twin Cities area. Rather than being limited to the holdings at Bush Memorial Library, students, faculty and staff have access to over 2 plus million books that can be freely requested and delivered within a day or so. So when you search the Bush Library at Hamline, you are actually searching all of CLIC member libraries from: Bethel University, Concordia University - St. Paul, St. Catherine University, University of Northwestern - St. Paul, and the University of St. Thomas.
