This course introduces selected musical traditions from around the world, featuring case studies from Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Oceania, Latin America, or North America. Students will be introduced to the discipline of ethnomusicology, which explores the relationship between cultural context and various forms of human musical expression including as a meaningful aspect of daily life. Students will also learn to identify the basic elements of music, such as melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture, and form, as found in various musical cultures, will learn the variety of uses and functions attributed to music and gain a glimpse into the musicians’ perspectives.
