CAS SciFindern is a research discovery tool that allows you to explore the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) databases containing literature from many scientific disciplines including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, materials science, agricultural science, and more.

STEP 1: Create your account

You must create an account to access SciFindern by following the on-screen steps.

Note that you will need to use your @hamline.edu email to set up your SciFindern account. You need to do this either on-campus or by following our special link:

Create your CAS SciFindern account

STEP 2: Log in

After you have a SciFindern account:

Login to CAS SciFindern

You may have to first sign into the Bush Library Off-Campus Access using your Hamline username (not email)  and password, and then sign into SciFinder-n.

Note

If you do not use your SciFindern account regularly, ACS will "archive" your account after a long period of inactivity. Access will be curtailed and attempts to reset your SciFindern password will not work until a librarian contacts ACS on your behalf.

Contact a librarian if you think your account has been inadvertently archived.

Tip: login to your CAS SciFindern account at least yearly to maintain your active account.

Troubleshooting

If the links for CAS SciFindern don't work above, e.g. if you receive a

HTTP ERROR 413

or some other error, you can try going directly to SciFindern to sign in.

Note that this might not work off-campus.

Another option is to try starting a browser "New Incognito Window" or "New InPrivate window" and then again try accessing SciFindern through the Off-Campus login.

Known Issue

When off-campus, signing out from SciFindern may result in a HTTP ERROR 400. Clicking the "Reload" button doesn't resolve the issue.

Partial Solution: Ignore the error. Type in a new URL in the browser address bar and go to a different webpage, or use your browser back button to return to a different website.
