ARCHIVED-Searching for Book Reviews: Print Indexes

Print Indexes

Print Indexes and Literary Encyclopedias

If the Copyright Date of the Book you chose is older than 1980, you will have better luck locating a review of the book by using one of the following Print Resources here at Bush Library. Important: When using a Print Index to locate a book review, you must know the copyright date/publication date of the book.  Using any library online catalog (CLICsearch) will usually provide you with a record of the book and its publication (copyright) date.

Bush Library carries the following Print Indexes and several key Literary Encyclopedias when searching for older book reviews or background information on an author or literary genre. (if you need help in using any of these indexes, see the Reference Librarian on duty for assistance).

Z 1219 .C95  Book Review Digest  (latest 10 years on Index Table - past issues in  Reference) 1905 to Present
PN 1008.5  .O94 2006 (Vol. 1-4)  Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature. (2006). Oxford: Oxford University Press.

NOTE:  When searching a Print Index for a book review, first check the volume for the year of publication, then check the volume for the following year.  (For example, if the book was published in 1975, check the 1975 volume and the 1976 volume.)

Use CLICsearch to locate literary criticisms for a specific author. To find Literary Criticisms of a particular Author, you would Search the author's Last Name, First Name as a Subject Search.  For example:  Subject:  Steinbeck, John
(This approach allows you to search for books about the author or critiques and criticism about the author. For example:

Steinbeck, John, 1902-1968 -- Criticism and interpretation.)
